Energy Conversion at the Molecular Scale: What Vibrational Spectroscopy Reveals


Molecules constantly absorb and release energy through vibrations — the stretching and bending of chemical bonds. Ultrafast infrared spectroscopy, including two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy, captures these processes on the timescale they actually occur: picoseconds to femtoseconds. Understanding molecular energy transfer and vibrational dynamics is central to fields ranging from solar energy conversion to biological catalysis.
